Safety and emergencies

Areas advised against, risks on the road and in town, scams and numbers to keep with you. Advice varies with the country that publishes it.

Areas advised against

  • Advised against except for essential travel by France (update of 13 March 2026): the northern borders, exposed to population movements from the DRC, with possible explosive remnants in the north-west. Take care between Livingstone and Victoria Falls, where tourists have been attacked; the falls site and large hotels are secure.

Crime

  • Incidents are few but can be violent (armed robbery, burglary, carjacking). Avoid walking and intercity travel after dark; city taxis are reliable. Check you are not being followed when you come home at night.
