In town
In Lomé, avoid the seafront, beach and nearby hotel surroundings from sunset, as well as the Ghanaian border: knife attacks have occurred. Do not travel on foot or by motorbike at night.

On the road
Accidents are frequent; do not drive at night (almost no signs, highway robbers, especially in the north). In the rainy seasons (late March to July, mid-September to late October), a 4x4 is recommended. Avoid motorbike taxis ("zem"); use taxis with yellow plates.

Sea, climate and natural hazards
Swimming is dangerous along the whole coast (strong currents); only a few equipped private beaches east of Lomé port allow careful swimming. Recreational sailing is strongly advised against (piracy).
