Getting around

France recommends never using motorbike taxis (clando men), which are dangerous and often targeted by criminals; Canada advises against trucks and minibuses for travel between towns.

A French licence is recognised for the first three months of your stay.

An international driving permit is required.

Traffic rules are little respected and an incident can escalate quickly: a Chadian driver is strongly recommended. After an accident, a report must be drawn up by the police or gendarmerie.

Outside N'Djamena and the main towns, roads and tracks are in poor condition and often impassable in the rainy season (May to October). Fuel is often scarce outside towns: carry reserves.

Motorbike taxis are advised against: high risk of accidents and snatch theft.
