Currency and cash
The currency is the South Sudanese pound (SSP); the Sudanese pound is not legal tender. Dollar notes dated before 2006 or marked are rejected. Cards are accepted only in major hotels, some restaurants and supermarkets; ATMs are unreliable. Exchange only at banks and authorised bureaus and bring cash dollars for your stay.

Accounts and mobile money
According to the World Bank (Global Findex, 2021 survey), 6% of adults have an account, at a bank or with mobile money, and 1% have a mobile money account (payments and transfers by phone). To open a mobile money account, ask the mobile operators which documents they require and what the fees are.
