Practical guides: Seychelles

Safety and emergencies

Areas advised against, risks on the road and in town, scams and numbers to keep with you. Advice varies with the country that publishes it.

Areas advised against

  • The high seas north of the archipelago are strongly advised against (piracy). Sailing between the inner islands is possible with care (no solo or night crossings); heightened vigilance in the south-west, from Mahé to Aldabra and Farquhar (trafficking). Report your plans to the MSCIO maritime security centre.

Crime

  • The inner islands (Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, Silhouette) remain relatively safe, but petty crime is rising (theft on beaches and in town, burglaries, sometimes in hotels), especially after dark. Leave documents and valuables in a safe.

Sea, climate and natural hazards

  • Accidental drownings every year: currents, reefs and dangerous wildlife; respect swimming bans, rescue capacity is limited. Torrential rain is possible: take care on the roads (landslides, falling trees).
