Terrorism and kidnapping
The risk of attacks and kidnapping of Westerners remains high, including in Niamey; places used by foreigners may be targeted. Armed groups operate on the borders with Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria and Chad.

In Niamey, keep your schedules and routes discreet and avoid public events and unsecured or outlying venues (hotels, bars, restaurants, nightclubs). Checks may increase on the airport road.

On the road
Police roadblocks are frequent, especially at night: approach slowly, comply and switch on the interior light. Roads are a major cause of death; outside the capital, emergency services are unreliable.
