Currency and cash
The country is cash-based and short of cash: cards do not work at banks, ATMs or hotels, and no bank changes money. Offices approved by the Central Bank apply black-market rates; informal exchange carries a risk of arrest.

Accounts and mobile money
According to the World Bank (Global Findex, 2024 survey), 33% of adults have an account, at a bank or with mobile money. To open a mobile money account, ask the mobile operators which documents they require and what the fees are.
