French nationals receive a free 15-day renewable short-stay visa on arrival, including at land borders.

British nationals do not need a visa: the entry stamp allows 28 days, extendable twice by 28 days at the Banjul immigration office or the tourist police. Beyond that, a residence permit is needed.

Visa before departure from the Embassy of The Gambia (USD 200) or on arrival (USD 108), usually with a 30-day stay granted. Overstays cost USD 15 per month, payable at the airport on departure.

For a tourist stay under 28 days with a single entry through Banjul airport: no visa fee, but a security tax of 20 euros or dollars on arrival and on departure. According to the Gambian immigration department (August 2020), no visa is needed via the land border with Senegal.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, TogoCitizens of ECOWAS states enter without a visa for stays of up to 90 days, through an official border post, with a valid travel document and an international vaccination certificate; beyond that, an extension must be requested from the authorities. Since Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger withdrew (29 January 2025), ECOWAS has maintained this right for their citizens until further notice. Each state keeps the right to refuse entry to anyone inadmissible under its law.
Passport and documents
An airport security fee of 20 dollars (or 20 euros, or 1,000 dalasis) is due on arrival and departure by air; card machines are often out of order, so bring cash.
