Before you leave

  • See your doctor or a travel clinic before departure. Yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from an endemic area (otherwise, quarantine of up to 6 days is possible).

  • Insurance covering treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation is essential; the embassy does not pay these costs.

  • Yellow fever: the international vaccination certificate is required on entry for travellers aged 9 months or older coming from a country with risk of transmission, including after a stopover of more than 12 hours in such a country. The CDC does not recommend this vaccine for this destination. Rules change: check them before departure and talk to a doctor or an international vaccination centre.

  • Malaria: the CDC page does not report transmission in this country. If your trip includes other countries, ask a doctor for advice.

Insurance and care

  • There are many public and private hospitals; university hospitals are generally better equipped than other public hospitals. Most emergency care there is free, but follow-up can be expensive: health insurance is needed.
