Advised against except for essential travel: central Kibira and the rest of the Rwandan border.

In town
In Bujumbura, do not walk, even in the centre, especially at night; do not go to Bwiza, Kanyosha, Musaga, Kamenge, Cibitoke, Ngagara, Rohero 2-INSS or the outskirts after dark. Stay alert in bars and at the bus station; grenade attacks took place in 2024.

Terrorism and kidnapping
An al-Shabaab attack cannot be ruled out, especially in Bujumbura. Avoid political gatherings and take care in crowded places.

On the road
Do not travel at night: after 6 pm, roads are no longer policed. Mountain roads are dangerous (the RN1 Bujumbura-Kayanza in particular), fuel shortages are frequent. Avoid public transport, taxis and motorbike taxis; rent a 4x4 with a driver. Accident: traffic police +257 22 22 51 24, then the embassy.
