Driving locally
Secondary roads and bridges are generally in poor condition and drink-driving is common, especially at weekends (return trips to Luanda from the beach). Drive with doors locked and, outside cities, in convoys of at least two vehicles, ideally four-wheel drives.

Other transport
Avoid public transport, buses and shared van taxis; door-to-door taxis are scarce and expensive, so hire a car with a driver. Police checkpoints are frequent: carry certified copies of your passport and, in the provinces, the originals.
